You Are the Expert of Your Own Body
I am the only one who knows my body, how I feel, and what I want. What I wanted was to be able to move my body with grace and ease. I believed it was possibleâI just had to find practitioners who believed it was possible too.
I got a referral to see a rehabilitation doctor so I could regain some of my range of motion. The specialist was super casual and totally cool. He asked if he could touch my back, and as he poked around a little bit, he became pie-eyed.
âMrs. Harris, I have never seen anything like this before. Your fascia is so tight that your entire back feels like cement. Iâm sorry to tell you this, but there is nothing I can do for you. I donât have any tools in my toolbox to help you. But I can recommend an osteopath. I donât understand what they do or how they work, but you need to find yourself the best osteopath that money can buy. I am a doctor and I know the body, but they can grab your kidney and move it around, and somehow it gets rid of all your pain. I know it sounds far-fetched, but it works. Thatâs all Iâve got for you. Itâs been a real pleasure meeting you. I hope you find some help.â
I should have been disappointed. Here was another doctor telling me he couldnât help me, but I wasnât discouraged. I thanked him for his honesty, and I left excited, knowing exactly what to do next. I had a client who had been telling me about his osteopath and encouraging me to go see him. An osteopath is a doctor who takes a whole-body approach. They perform manual manipulations as well as treat the root cause of disease, including emotional traumas. I called the osteopathâs office right away and was told it was a four-month wait but that I could see someone else. Since he had come highly recommended, I was willing to wait. After all, I had already been waiting years.
My appointment with the osteopath finally arrived, and I was very nervous. I had no idea what to expect. I was worried that he was going to try and manipulate something in my body and break me or cause pain.
When I arrived at the appointment, I found it strange that there were no health history questionnaires or intake forms to fill out. Faisal, the osteopath, came out and introduced himself, and then he asked me to walk ahead of him and go into the first room on my right. As I was walking, I knew he was watching me walk. I hate it when people watch me walk; it always makes me feel extra self-conscious. I tried to walk as quickly as possible to get it over with.
As Faisal walked into the room behind me, he said, âSo you have a history of chronic migraines.â
âYou saw that from watching me walk? Very clever.
